"There are all these little shops around SLO. One of my favorites is Ruby Rose. It's owned by a dear friend of mine named Steph. There are not stores like this anymore. Steph knows everyone in the community and they just do such a good job. She shops at flea markets and estate sales and she is just so true to her own style. It's very vintage Americana, like old California West. Just everything she curates, she's just a creative force and it's really a gem of a store."
"I started the shop out of a love of travel and road tripping. My love started in the 1960s when my dad would throw us all in the station wagon, luggage on top, and we'd just head out as a family. He would take us to every national park, national monument, fort, or just a marker in the sand to see everything about the West.
That was what we did as a family, and my favorite part was the souvenir shops and the trading posts. If we were good, my dad would give us $5, which was a lot in the sixties! We could get out of the car and go into the souvenir shops, and that was where my love of kitschy, fun just things that make ya' happy came from. Ya' know, cuz everything in there when you're eight years old was just sparkly and all the beading and everything.
So when people come into the store, that's kind of how we've got it to make them feel. Like, ‘Oh my gosh, I want this! But I want that, and look at that!'
So it’s definitely the little skip feeling that you get - were not always looking for the wow factor, we’re just looking for your heart to beat a little bit faster."
